#236, Suminagashi Printing with Marilyn Wold
Thursday, July 18
11 am – 2 pm
–All supplies provided
Limit of 12 students.Join artist and author Marilyn Wold as she returns to Sequoia Gallery + Studios to share the fun and beauty of creating suminagashi paper prints. Suminagashi is the Japanese term for the process where sumi ink is floated on the surface of clean water, then transferred to a sheet of paper. Each resulting monoprint will be as unique as a finger print, unreproducible.
Marilyn is the author of a book about handmade paper illustrating plants used by the early Polynesians. She made the paper for the books and each page displays the image of the plant used to create that sheet of paper. Marilyn is an artist and paper maker who has taught and exhibited her work all over the world. She often employed suminagashi printing on paper she created in her own studio (in Hawaii and the northwest). Marilyn has been featured in other paper maker’s books and on instructional DVD’s about paper making. For this class, we are fortunate to be able to see some of the paper she has made, and to learn from her the suminagashi process.
This suminagashi printing workshop is for adults, ages 18 and up.
It is offered as a fund-raiser for Sequoia Gallery + Studios, which is a nonprofit visual arts organization. The workshop is available at this extraordinary low price because Marilyn is kindly donating her time and paper printing experience to the local artist community.
