Hello reader,
The kids are back in school, and the days are getting shorter and cooler. We at Sequoia love Washington County in the fall. In addition to bringing you a lovely new fall show in the gallery with works by Lieta Gratteri, Gayle Pedemonte and Janis Childs, September also marks the return of our annual outdoor painting event, Plein Air @ Washington County. We have an exciting event planned for you this year, so be sure to register soon. And if you need some practice before the event, check out Yong Hong Zhong's Watercolor Painting Class below. Zhong won First Place at Plein Air 2016.

Plein Air @ Washington County 2018: Wednesday, September 26 - Saturday, September, 29

September is here and Plein Air is just around the corner. The festivities start on Wednesday, September 26, with registration from 8am - 9:30am, followed by the Quick Draw at the Walters Center. For the full schedule of events, visit our the Plein Air page on the Sequoia

On Saturday, September 29, Stephen Hayes will begin judging at 1:00, followed by the Artists Reception and Awards Ceremony from 4:00-6:00 pm.
The prizes are $750 First Place, $500 Second Place, $250 for Best Nocturnal, $250 for Quick Draw, and two $500 purchase awards. Honorable Mention will receive a gift basket of art supplies.

#224, Introduction to Silk Painting with Cheryl Cameron

Sept 16, Sunday
12:00 pm - 5:00 pm
This workshop will be an introduction to silk painting using the serti technique. We will talk about technique, using resist/gutta, color application and blending, salt technique, setting the colors and all that good stuff in plenty of detail. You’ll paint a handkerchief to get used to the process, and then an 8 x 54 inch scarf.
Ages: 15 to adult (under 15 with a parent)

Portland artist, Yong Hong Zhong holds a major in Illustration and minor in Art History from The Pratt Institute in New York. As a career artist, Yong has completed work for Disney Animation Studios and MTV Animation Studios.
Yong’s plein air watercolor paintings have earned top recognition at competitions in each state along the west coast as well as New York. Sequoia is fortunate to have Yong leading this small workshop which will fill up quickly.

Member News

Victoria Shepard will be showing 11 of her sand paintings in an group exhibition entitled Contemplative Landscapes at Walters Cultural Art Center through September 21st. A reception is scheduled for Tuesday, September 4th from 5-8pm. Victoria will do a short introduction to her work (Sand as a Medium) at 6:30 pm.

Christina Massocco recently started a new job as manager of Beards Framing in Beaverton, Oregon. Christina says the store has a large supply of ready made and custom frames and offers a 25% discount to artists. Pick up one of Christina's business cards in the gallery.

Sequoia is seeking artists for gallery membership. Both 2D and 3D artists of all mediums are welcome to apply for membership in our active community of artists. Download an application from our website or stop by the gallery to pick up an application. Our next prospective member jury will meet the week of September 10 - 14. Artists interested in submitting their application should do so by September 7 in order to be considered for membership this fall.

Whether you are an artist, collector, or someone who just appreciates fine art, you can help Sequoia by volunteering to help staff the gallery. Gallery staffers serve 4 hour shifts on the days of their choosing, depending on slots available. Volunteer applications are available online or at the gallery.
