September 27 – 30, 2017
Finishing their third year as the host of this annual outdoor painting event, Sequoia Gallery + Studios truly put their ‘artistic stamp’ on the Hillsboro community with the 2017 Plein Air @ Washington County event! We had amazing weather and an increase in participating artists anxious to ‘paint the landscape’ and the resulting art work is proof that 2017 made its mark.
Our chosen mantra for this year’s event was, “Simplify and Refine”. With this in mind, our committee made some changes and really focused on the mission of Plein Air @ Washington County as a Sequoia fundraising event and community art experience.
This year, we took a few calculated risks; mixed things up; took full ownership as host of this event and achieved great success! Our artists were positively inspired and they had a real presence in our downtown community. Sequoia Gallery + Studios also experienced more direct exposure as the host venue to the Saturday Artists’ Award Reception and Wet-Paint Show & Sale, which had in previous years been held at alternate venues.
These changes really put our committee of volunteers to the test and WOW… everyone just really stepped up and met these challenges. Our committee is already preparing for next year’s event. Although we have many specifics to work through, the Plein Air event is looking to expand deeper into our Hillsboro community and Washington County by implementing more comprehensive marketing strategies.
Sequoia would like to thank the Plein Air Committee for their hard work in making this year’s event such a resounding success: Mia Hocking (Committee Chair), Carol Loughner and Jan Simmons (Committee Co-chairs) and Barbara Mason, Sylvia Tucker, Gayle Pedemonte, Martin Conley, Lawrence Whitlock, Leo Brew (Core Committee Members)
Sequoia would like to extend a special thanks to Robert Gamblin of Gamblin Artists’ Colours who judged the entries and Mayor Steve Calloway who spoke at the Awards Ceremony.
Last but not least, Sequoia would like to thank all our sponsors and community volunteers: The Hillsboro Arts & Culture Council, Melissa Moore; City of Hillsboro; Mayor of Hillsboro, Steve Callaway; TriMet; Premier Bank; Colours Art Supplies; Blick Art Supplies; Gamblin Artists’ Oil Colors; Aaron Bros; Plein Air Magazine; Guerilla Painter/Hudson Art; Gene Zurbrugg; La Provence Bakery; New Seasons Market; Clarks Pub; The Book Arcade; Class Cuts Salon; Office Depot; Helvetia Winery; Manaia Coffee House; Longbottom Coffee, Gabe Parsons; Albertsons; Beaverton Bakery; Hills Florist; Robert Gamblin (Prizes), Jane Vanderzanden (designs); Heather Rubicam (catering); Larry Whitlock (event photographer); Marlene Nash; and the ever supportive Sequoia membership.
