Go From Thumbnail Sketches to Watercolor Completion
Portland artist, Yong Hong Zhong holds a major in Illustration and minor in Art History from The Pratt Institute in New York. As a career artist, Yong has completed work for Disney Animation Studios and MTV Animation Studios.
Yong’s plein air watercolor paintings have earned top recognitions at competitions in each state along the west coast as well as New York. Sequoia is fortunate to have Yong leading this small workshop which will fill up quickly.
Day 1 Lecture on visual structure of painting, composition and simplification with emphasis on values, brief discussion on paints, brushes and papers, basic
watercolor techniques (demo) followed by student hands-on practice, another demo from black and white photo followed by student hands-on practice, end of the day critique.
Day 2 Continue lecture on visual structure of painting. composition and simplification with emphasis on values, color, light and shadow, demo from color photo, student hands-on practice and end of the day critique.
Day 3 Continue lecture on visual structure of painting, composition and simplification with emphasis on movement and rhythm, advanced watercolor techniques, outdoor plein air demo (weather permitting), student hands-on practice on location and end of workshop critique.
PAINTS: Hansa Yellow, Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Pthalo Blue, Burnt Umber, Yellow Ocher, Ivory Black, Chinese White. I use M. Graham and Daniel Smith, other brands are fine too.
BRUSHES: 8 to 10 round, flat sable or synthetic brushes with variety of sizes and bring what you already own.
PAPER: ARCHES Cold Press 10×14 or 9×12, 140 lb, 12 sheets
OTHER: Palette, small sketchbook, water container, paper towel, masking tape, drawing board, 2B pencils, palette knife, eraser and a small spray bottle.
